Green Tea and High Cholesterol Levels
A 2003 study involving 240 men and women found that consuming
Green Tea Extract capsules were
shown to reduce LDL cholesterol. The study focused on the consumption of 375mg
capsules of Green Tea extract containing the same amounts of theaflavins and catechin
that would be in an equivalent 7 cups of steeped green tea leaves.
The study found that consuming the capsules for a period of 12 weeks reduced LDL cholesterol levels
of those who had moderately high cholesterol by almost 20%. While the reduction amount
is no comparable to the reduction amounts obtained from statin drugs, the reduction amount
is equivalent to some non-statin treatments. This would suggest that one can have the same benefits
from consuming a safe herbal treatment with little to no side effects than
consuming drugs which can have undesirable side effects. While this by no means proves
that Green Tea is 100% effective in the treatment of high cholesterol, initial evidence is
positive and Green Tea should be considered as a possible treatment for relatively moderate high
cholesterol levels.
Green Tea Beneficial Ingredients
The same polyphenols anti oxidants which are believed to have anti cancer, anti bacterial and anti viral properties are the same ones believed to possibly reduce high blood cholesterol levels. The plyphenol anti oxidants are believed help the body excrete cholesterol safely. Cholesterol excretion is the process by which the body rids itself of excess cholesterol. While there are many drugs on the market that reduce cholesterol levels, using a safe and natural alternative is considered to be more beneficial due to the reduced possibility of unwanted side effects.
